Basic Life Support - BLS

This paragraph is missing the check for a pulse statement, " **Treatment: **If the patient is unconscious call 911 immediately then perform CPR—if the patient is a child or infant perform CPR for 2 minutes and then call 911. Make sure to lay the patient down with his/her feet 12 inches above the heart. Check for C-A-B’s. You may need to put the patient on his/her side to prevent choking. Make sure to check for other injuries. " Why? It likely omits the pulse check intentionally because it is written for lay rescuers. Finding a pulse accurately during an emergency is surprisingly difficult, and prolonged “pulse hunting” can delay lifesaving compressions. Current guidance is: Lay rescuer: If someone is unresponsive and not breathing normally or only gasping, assume cardiac arrest, call 911/get an AED, and begin CPR. Do not spend time checking a pulse. Healthcare professional: Check breathing and pulse simultaneously for no more than 10 seconds. If no definite pulse is felt, begin CPR. American Heart Association adult BLS guidance However, the paragraph itself is poorly worded: unconsciousness alone does not mean CPR is required. A safer version would be: Check responsiveness and normal breathing. If the person is unresponsive and not breathing normally or is only gasping, call 911, obtain an AED, and begin CPR. If the person is breathing normally but remains unconscious, place them in the recovery position when appropriate and continually monitor breathing until EMS arrives. Also, raising the feet applies only to certain cases of shock when there is no trauma or injury and the position does not cause pain—not during CPR. AHA first-aid guidance The paragraph seems to have tossed shock care, unconscious-person care, and cardiac-arrest care into one medical soup pot. I think "pulse hunting" could be discussed more during the curriculum, and how to default in an pulse hunt to CPR while assuming cardiac arrest.
